Of course, this is a children’s picture book, but it definitely stood out as being an iffy message for youngsters. It is meant to show childish innocence, but the fact that he steals the penguin and then never returns him or makes amends for the theft left me nonplussed. My only two issues were that it was a bit long for a baby JJ’s age (however, it would be great for an older child), and the manner in which the little boy, Elliot, procures his penguin – which is to say, he STEALS him! Elliot sneaks Magellan out of an aquarium by stuffing him into a backpack and walking out. The art is adorable, and very reminiscent of Disney’s art from the 60’s and 70’s. This was a cute book with a fun, silly story and a twist ending that made me chuckle. It’s far from perfect, or even just plain good. I have to say, I really despised Gabe, mental illness aside, the guy was an A-grade arse. The chapters are short and reel you in with the then and now and the two different character perspectives. That aside, The Soulmate is compulsively readable. I enjoy her humour and the absence of it within this one was noticeable to me. Sally’s trademark dark humour was absent from this one, probably my only criticism of it. One who can not only hold your rapture for the duration, but also reel you in until you are so invested that it’s almost feels like you’d be doing yourself some sort of injustice if you didn’t read and read as much as you could in a single sitting. And that, right there, is a masterful storyteller. Sally Hepworth has long been a page turner for me, but in her latest, The Soulmate, she had me fuming in my seat, reading as fast as I could, hoping against hope that Pippa’s blinders would come off before it was too late. I’ve never read a novel where this has been more apparent between a couple. ![]() La weatherly books7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() This two-in-one bundle includes the following audiobooks:1. ![]() You will discover how to rearrange your mental and emotional mindset to overcome anxiety.
